Julian has extensive experience of public buildings, gallery and performance spaces and residential developments, both new build and refurbishments, including many listed buildings. 

His current projects at Skelly & Couch include the masterplan for BREEAM ‘excellent’-graded Winchester College, involving a new sports complex and district heating system; the renovation of the Grade II-listed Hall for Cornwall to create a new three-tiered auditorium and a new digital creative hub, with workspaces and meeting spaces for the creative industries; Enterprise Enfield, providing co-working and light industrial maker space; and the refurbishment and extension of the Warburg Institute at the University of London.

Julian recently completed engineering works at multiple RIBA award-winning projects, including a new gallery and visitors’ centre at the 2019 RIBA Stirling Prize finalist The Weston at Yorkshire Sculpture Park; the major refurbishment and rebuilding of the Grade II*-listed Battersea Arts Centre, which also has a co-working innovation hub/space and bar; and a new 400-seat theatre and a performing arts centre for the Perse School, recent winner of The Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award for 2020.

His previous projects include the design and delivery of the RIBA National Award-winning Hastings Contemporary Jerwood Gallery, housing a prominent 20th century art collection; the much-admired refurbishment at the Bush Theatre, an AJ Retrofit Award finalist; the new Caryl Churchill Theatre and back-of-house space at Royal Holloway London, beside Grade II-listed Sutherland House; new back-of-house facilities for the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre; a new studio and gallery for the artist and author Edmund De Waal; and the RIBA East Award-winning Acme Artists’ Studios at the High House Production Park providing workshops and work/live units.
